When/Why do you have to get an MRI?

Your physician generally suggests getting an MRI scan done when he/she suspects a medical condition that cannot be detected in a regular physical exam.  It's an advanced scanning device that can provide information that other technologies like ultrasound, X-ray or CT scans cannot provide without radiation..

  • An MRI usually can take 30-45 minutes, depending upon specific requirements.

  • You will be given headphones or earplugs to help you relax and block out the noise.

How are MRI scans performed?

How are MRI scans performed?

You are asked to lie down on a motorized bed, and once comfortable, the bed slides inside the cylindrical structure, which is open at both ends.  A computer, operated by a technologist, is used to manage the scanning procedure, which is located in an adjacent room to keep it away from the magnetic field generated by the scanner.  The technologist can see and converse with you from the other room.
